Hello from Milwaukee! Here are some mini adventures from the past few weeks! Rewind to the end of February. It was a rainy Saturday and Ryan and I took the bus to eat brunch at a restaurant called...Brunch!
We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of our food! Ryan ordered the Avocado Egg BLT that had avocado, honey cured bacon, sriracha aioli, tomato, lettuce, fried egg, and sourdough with a Signature Pancake on the side. I had the Quinoa Power Bowl that came with diced potatoes, red quinoa, brown rice, bell peppers, Addis spice, mushrooms, Jones Farm turkey sausage, avocado, sweet chilli sauce, and two eggs. The food was amazing, and the only downside was that they had a very limited coffee menu. I usually like fancy coffee drinks at brunch, but I quickly got over my disappointment after sampling the meal.

Hey, look at my plants! This photo was from a sparse photo period during which I was mostly going back and forth between working my two jobs, going to classes, and trying to stay on top of homework for all my classes. My cacti grew babies! And, the succulents I propagated this summer are growing well since being transferred to "big plant" pots. Also, I have no evidence to prove it, but my roommates and I went out to Belair to celebrate the fact that all three of us were accepted into our first choice graduate schools! Woot! It will be sad to move away from each other in a couple months, but we're making the most of the time that is left.
Ryan and I got together a couple times during the first week of March to cook food. One night we made salmon burgers with roasted sweet potatoes and salad, and another night we made made Cajun food to celebrate Mardi Gras!
Ryan has been printing some new planters for my growing plant collection. Pretty soon I will be re-potting them all! It should be a fun time. There are a lot of cool printable planters available online for free. We also found a custom Settlers of Catan game set that we are now in the middle of painting.
Coffee and school craziness! I caught a cold just in time for midterms week. I kept tea tree oil in my oil diffuser around the clock and upped my coffee consumption. I tried a new drink from Stone Creek Coffee called "Mexican Spice" that is a mocha with cinnamon syrup and a dash of cayenne pepper. It was great! We also experienced some crazy weather that ranged from snow to rain to fog. I took this photo on campus because it felt so surreal!
Last Thursday was "Pie Day." I was studying for my structural kinesiology exam, but Ryan asked if I wanted to go out for pizza and I couldn't get my coat on fast enough! We went to Pizza Man and ate SO much food. We ordered drinks, a small cheese pizza ($3.14 for pie day), and a large custom pizza with white sauce, mozzarella cheese, sausage, chicken, pickled jalapenos, mushrooms, and fried eggs. It was an odd combo but strangely satisfying. Between the two of us we ate all the pizza we ordered and I didn't feel bad about it in the slightest!
On Friday night, Ryan and I made a fancy food spread to enjoy while watching Murder on the Orient Express. We made popcorn on the stove for the first time and had quite an adventure! After adding the single popcorn kernel to test the oil, it all started on fire! Thankfully Ryan kept a calm head and took it off the stove and swirled the pot a little until it went out. Then we set it on the kitchen rug while we opened some windows and it left a large black burn on the rug. Oops! Second time was the charm though, and we made some nice popcorn!
Last weekend I went shopping at Old Navy and everything in the store was on sale! I got some spring break staples because this spring break I am going somewhere for the first time since starting college! My roommate and I made another trip out and picked up some snacks for the plane. Ryan also baked me some yummy banana bread to take with! :)
I spent the rest of this last weekend finishing homework and worked at one of my jobs this morning. All that's left to do this afternoon is pack, wrap up loose ends, and head to the airport! I'll be honest that I am super nervous about flying, but we'll see how it goes! I am trying to stay optimistic! Hello from Milwaukee! Life has been super crazy lately. This week is midterms and since I'm taking seven classes, it's been pretty hellish! Last Tuesday, though, Ryan and I had a mini mardi gras night. After my classes, I went to the student union to make a glitter mask and collected several strings of beads I don't know what to do with now. That night, we set aside time for cooking. We made sausage jumbalaya and corn maque choux. I used my mom's jumbalaya recipe and combined her corn one with another I found online, and it turned out pretty good!
I started cooking the bacon while Ryan chopped up onions and bell peppers.
I used a large pot for the jambalaya since we decided to double the recipe so we could both take home lots of leftovers! We sauteed a large onion, 2 large bell peppers, and a mound of minced garlic in olive oil until the onion started to turn translucent. Then we added 2 pounds of sliced sausage and let that sit for a couple minutes so the sausage absorbed some flavor. Lastly, we added 5 cups of chicken broth, 2 cups of dry white rice, 2 cans of diced tomatoes, and 2 TBS of Cajun seasoning. We brought it to a boil and then lowered it to a simmer for 25 minutes until the rice was finished cooking.
For the corn maque choux, we cooked the whole 1 pound pack of bacon and saved the grease. We added half a stick of butter (okay, actually a whole stick, but I recommend reducing it unless you add more corn!!) and sauteed 1 large onion and 1 large bell pepper in it. While this was happening, I chopped up the bacon into little pieces and probably ate a couple slices from all my snacking. Once the veggies were soft, I added 3.5 cups of corn (2 cans), 1 TBS of Cajun seasoning, a 1/2 cup of half n' half, and the bacon pieces. I let it simmer until the half n' half reduced and it smelled amazing.

I've been craving some Cajun food since our Cajun cookout last fourth of July! I'm going to tweak the corn maque choux recipe next time I make it, but what we made hit the spot last Tuesday! We rounded off the meal with some pinot grigio and had a great night setting aside our schoolwork for a few hours.

One of my favorite breakfast dishes you can find in Milwaukee is the "Sweet Potato Noshers" plate at Cafe Hollander. I was so impressed with this dish that I had to remake it myself! The official description of the dish is "garlic shallot roasted sweet potatoes, poblano peppers, pickled pearl onions, Hook's 3-year aged cheddar, High Speed Wit beer cheese sauce, Sriracha roasted cashews, sunny side up egg." Ryan and I made some switcheroos, and we think it turned out great! Here was our inspiration:
First, we cut three large sweet potatoes into wedges. In batches, we laid them on a plate, poked holes in them with a fork, covered with a damp paper towel, and microwaved them for 5 minutes to soften them up. This was to prevent them from being under cooked. The only fault with the original dish is that a couple of the potato wedges were too crunchy.
Next, we made a cheese sauce out of butter, milk, and shredded Pepper Jack cheese. We decided to use Pepper Jack instead of beer cheese sauce because I couldn't find any beer cheese at the grocery store. We added additional milk as needed and stirred frequently.
We then used a large fry pan to brown a chopped shallot with a hunk of minced garlic and oil.
After the shallot had wilted and become fragrant, we added the microwave-softened sweet potatoes in batches and pan-fried them until their edges were crispy.
After the first batch of sweet potato wedges was cooked, we arranged them in a circular formation on a large plate. We also chopped our jalapeno garnishes during this time.
Once the second batch of sweet potatoes was in the fry pan, we started our sunny side-up eggs in a smaller pan to the side. I do not like uncooked egg white, so we put them on low and long so the whites would cook as fully as possible without completely solidifying the yolks.
After arranging the final batch of sweet potato wedges on the plate, we dumped the crispy shallot pieces over the top of the small mountain.
Second-to-last, we smothered them. We poured the Pepper Jack sauce over the top first, then followed it with sprinkles of aged cheddar. We then added lots of pickled cocktail onions, Sriracha roasted sunflower seeds (instead of cashews), and sliced jalapeno pepper (instead of poblano). We tried to distribute them evenly.
Last but not least, we added our sunny side-up eggs! This was a treat to finally dig into!
Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two dishes. While Cafe Hollander's does look a little bit prettier and was definitely photographed in better lighting, I actually preferred our homemade version of the dish! Ryan and I have made this meal a couple times now and it has gone well on both occasions! Give this a try the next time you make brunch (or dinner) at home!
Ingredients: 3 sweet potatoes, minced garlic, 1 shallot, cheese sauce (bought or homemade), shredded cheddar cheese, cocktail onions, spicy nuts, jalapenos, and eggs.
Instructions: Peel and wedge the sweet potatoes. Roast or fry potatoes with the chopped shallot. Prepare or heat cheese sauce. Prepare the eggs and slice the jalapeno. Arrange potato wedges on plate, smoother with cheese sauce and remaining toppings. Lastly, crown with eggs.
For my first Milwaukee restaurant spotlight, I had to pick Belair Cantina. Belair was one of the first restaurants I tried after moving to Milwaukee and it is the go-to place for my roommates and I. They have a "California Coast" styled interior and an amazing taco menu. They also make sure to work some humor into their messages on the sign outside the restaurant and their menu. I can live by one of their old menu quotes, "Inhale tacos...exhale negativity."
After being seated, they serve complimentary chips with three different types of salsa. My favorite is the yellow/orange one. They change up their taco selection, but as of the last time I went my some of my favorites are "Housemade Chorizo" (ground guajillo pork, potatoes, radish, cilantro, queso fresco), "Fried Avocado and Bacon" (Avocado, arugula, corn salsa, bacon pieces, serrano chile mayo), "Zihuatanejo Shrimp" (shrimp, pico de gallo, citrus slaw, chipotle ancho mayo), and "Port Queso" (portabella mushroom, queso fundido, black beans, radish, chimichurri). Order three tacos and get free rice and beans (or, as Ryan has done, six tacos and two free sides of rice and beans). To boot, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, select tacos are only $2! So, get a large meal for just $6 or an even larger for just $12!
They also have huge, tasty burritos. Their menu boasts they're as large as chihuahuas, and they aren't wrong! For a lighter option, they give you the chance to have each burrito in a bowl instead. My two favorite burrito bowls are the "Shrimp" (chipotle shrimp, citrus slaw, corn salsa, pico, rice, cilantro, chipotle ancho mayo, salsa roja, queso fundido) and "Port Rajas" (portabella mushroom, rajas, rice, black beans, lettuce, roasted corn salsa, crema, chimichurri and guacamole, topped with queso fundido and salsa roja). Soooo good!
We most often go to the Downer location because it is close to our college campus and takes only a short walk to get there. They usually have funny sayings on their sign outside on the patio. My favorite from last fall was "currently training for taco body season!" It's always taco body season to me! After you're finished eating, they offer free stickers and gum. We have so many stickers that we just started putting them on our recycling bin because we ran out of practical places to put them!
They've also got wonderful drinks! Their drink menu also changes, but they always keep their frozen margaritas (they were previously called "el cheapo" margaritas, so that's what we always ordered!). Right now they have some awesome seasonal flavors, including "Blackberry Plum," "Bergamot Orange Ginger," and "Pom-Cider" margaritas.
Writing out all these menus items has me dying to get back ASAP and eat everything! If you ever find yourself in Milwaukee and in the mood for tacos, this is a great place to go!
Hello from Milwaukee! Rewind to to to last week. Ryan and I felt inspired to bake a pie, so we used my family's pie crust recipe along with a blueberry and cranberry filling we invented. In honor of the approaching Valentine's Day, I decorated the top with little crust hearts. I still have a little bit of pie crust dough left in the freezer to make into pie crust cookies sometime soon. Pie crust is one of my favorite things to eat, just the crust and no fillings! At holidays when I was a child, I would sneak into the kitchen and eat the pie crust off the pies! My mother did not appreciate that at all!! Thankfully we can joke about it now! Our filling turned out super runny, but it was a good first try! I bought some more butter so we can give it another go!
The night before Valentine's Day, I made two different brownie recipes to share with Ryan and my roommates. I used a cookie cutter to make them into hearts, and, not gonna lie, ate most of the non-heart remnants all by myself...
Ryan and I had a great Valentine's Day evening. We kept it casual (I wore my yoga pants) and went to dinner and a show! We were going to finally go to The Angry Taco, but turns out they close pretty early on Thursdays! Our second choice ended up a hidden gem because I cannot wait to go back! We had so much wonderful food at Cantina Tequila and Taco Bar. After eating, we attended an awesome performance of Fiddler on the Roof.
We started with margaritas, salsa, chips, and queso with pico de gallo.
Skip this chunk if you don't wanna hear in depth about these awesome tacos: The first on the left is the Tikka Chicken Taco that consists of battered chicken tossed in tikka masala sauce topped with cilantro rice, crema, and basil on a flour tortilla. The middle is the Sesame Ginger BBQ Chicken Won Ton Taco consisting of pulled chicken in sesame BBQ sauce and topped with kale, red cabbage slaw, and cotija cheese on a won ton wrapper. The last on the right is the Jamaican Me "Taco" Taco consisting of jerk chicken topped with banana pepper relish, onions, and carrots on a flour tortilla. SO many flavors on this plate. AND they have $2 tacos on Tuesdays and Thursdays! I will definitely be back!! :)
We finished our meal with churro donuts served with vanilla ice cream and drizzled in chocolate syrup. We were so full after this meal and it was worth every moment of it!
Last Friday, my family picked me up from Milwaukee to head to northern Wisconsin. We decided to spend the weekend with my grandparents to celebrate my grandfather's 80th birthday. One thing I enjoy about visiting them is we spend most of the time sitting in the kitchen talking. It seems as a group we can talk for hours without running out of conversation topics! On my grandpa's birthday, we went out to his favorite restaurant and then spent the rest of the night in good company. When we first arrived, we were shocked to see how much snow had accumulated up there! The snow pile in their front yard was about the same height as me and my sister! Overall, it was a great trip and I hope to see them all again soon!
I got back to Milwaukee Monday afternoon. I spent the rest of the day readjusting and prioritizing the work I had to do for the rest of the week. In the evening, Ryan and I went to Hill Park inside of Kilbourn Reservoir Park to take in the nighttime view of the cityscape. We decided to upgrade our promise rings for our anniversary and exchanged them at the park. I love what he picked out so much!! It's a rose gold band with a row of mini opals and sapphires. Afterwards, we sledded/slipped down the stairs of the hill (they had not been shoveled) and went to Ian's Pizza. I had a slice of the cheesy potato with ranch. It was a great night! :)
Last week, life was super crazy because I had to get all my work done before leaving for up north, so most days I just worked morning until night, cramming it all in. A relaxed and cheerful Valentine's Day and a peaceful weekend with my family was worth it though! I indulged in so much good company and good food. Last week's long weekend helped bring me back to reality, and I'm going to work harder to stay in touch with those most important to me. I hope you all had a good week! Thanks for reading!
Hello from Milwaukee! Last Friday after my anatomy lab, Ryan and I went cross country skiing! According to the Milwaukee Parks website, any of the parks in the city are free game for skiing, there are just no maintained trails. So, we suited up and went for an adventure! Some parts were easier than others. It was exciting when going over fresh snow, because sometimes just one ski would sink about a foot into the snow. Needless to say, we both went down a few times, but we had a lot of fun!
Selfies after I calmed my grumpiness down a bit. I was initially uncomfortable with what felt like randomly skiing in the middle of the city.
Thanks to this boy for helping me try new things! We were able to rent our gear for free from Ryan's workplace.
Last week we decided to cook up some pizza. We made a large batch of dough awhile back and had two crusts remaining in the freezer. I love making pizza with Ryan because we always use whatever we have on hand at the time and end up with some fun combinations! This time we got pretty fancy. We covered the dough with basil infused olive oil, topped that with chili pesto, then added southwest style cheese, mild cheddar, aged Parmesan, green onion, and sliced turkey that we fried in a pan.
So yummy. Adding the olive oil to the crust was great while the pizza was fresh, but did make it a little chewy when I reheated it the next day (there was only one piece leftover because we ate so much the night before). What should we put on our next pizza?
I walked to the grocery store last Sunday. It was warm out (40 degrees felt like spring after the polar vortex of the week before!) so I wore my summery shoes, not thinking about the fact there were snow piles everywhere and melting puddles in the streets. Oops! School got super crazy last week. My picture taking went down and coffee consumption went up. One moment that brightened an evening was Ryan making me a snack consisting of the rest of a tub of ice cream filled with chocolate chips and a glass a wine. Very much appreciated that evening haha!
One of my favorite things is a big, leisurely breakfast. These were my favorites from last week. Ryan and I made scrambled eggs with ham and mushrooms, toast with raspberry jelly, coffee, and a side of fruit (left). Later in the week I had leftover vegetable curry, eggs with sriracha, blackberries and clementines, and lots of coffee.
Ryan ordered a 3D printer and has been assembling it over the last couple weeks. It's now in working order! He printed this toy boat last night as a test and it is so cute! I'm definitely want to put it in my next bubble bath!!
Yesterday was super crazy. I saved some school work to do for the weekend, realized I misread my course website and discovered I had even more work to do, and ended up working almost nonstop from when I work up at 8:00 am to about 7:30 pm! I was so over school last night!! Thankfully this morning I had a coffee date with one of my oldest friends. It was so good to see her again! We found a cute coffee shop in the Third Ward that was surprisingly quiet for a Sunday morning and talked for almost three hours. Then we rode the HOP (the new streetcar system) through downtown Milwaukee! I've been wanting to try this since it opened!
After coffee, my roommate and I went to Colectivo to study the remainder of the afternoon. It was a productive work session! We ended it by going to Belair for tacos. I were so ready to treat ourselves by the time we got there because we slipped so many times on the walk over! There was a snow shower this afternoon and the sidewalks weren't sure if they should be covered in ice or puddles, so they decided on both! I tried all new tacos tonight: housemade chorizo, fried avocado and bacon, and roasted root vegetable. They were all amazing! When I got home this evening, I realized my cactus is growing little babies! They're so cute but I have no idea what to do once they're big enough to not need the parent.
That's been the start to my February. Life is crazy, but the little moments make me smile. Have a good week, and thanks for reading!
I think I might do two recaps a month because the events from the start of January feel like ages ago! I had some good times during my last few days at home before returning to Milwaukee. My family had a game night where we played Exploding Kittens, Uno, and Yahtzee. We also had a fancy "clean out the fridge" night where we finished random bags of crackers, cheese, pepperonis, vegetables, and pickles. We nommed while watching NCIS: New Orleans.
My mom and I went to a local vegetarian restaurant called Black Walnut Kitchen. We had some great French pressed coffee. I have been here three times now and have enjoyed my meal each time. To keep the ingredients local and in-season, the menu has looked different on each visit!
I had their Indian Vegetable Biryani dish that had vegetables, rice, yogurt dressing, raisins, and lots of spices! It came with their house salad that has really good buttermilk dill ranch dressing.
Chilling out enjoying the last day at home. I hung out in my mom's new attic studio space (it's only partially finished in these photos) doing some computer work and cuddled a lot with my dog. He's such a sweetie!

Back to Milwaukee! I had one sugary coffee drink on the way back because my new year's resolution to cut it out completely slipped my mind. Once of twice for the month of January. When I got back to Milwaukee, I continued with the minimalist game challenge where you get rid of the same number of items as the days of the month. This was a messy process so I only took pictures at random when I remembered. Needless to say, I completed the "game!" I didn't think I had that much stuff, but I did! My room feels so much tidier without all the extra stuff. I want to try the challenge again in May before I move, but only for 15 days.
My roomie and I went ice skating at Red Arrow Park. We tried to go on the last day of November but it was closed, so we got our redemption! We had a great time, and neither of us wiped out during the two hours we were there! Afterwards we headed to Belair for tacos. I was so hungry I didn't bother taking photos. I was surprised when one of the bills I received as change had the name "Ryan" with a heart next to it written on it. Ryan is my boyfriend's name, so this incident just seemed slightly unbelievable! How strange!
Back on campus! I returned to campus the week before classes resumed to do some training in the research lab I work in. We just started working on a new component of our study, so there was a lot of work to do! Basically I spent the whole last week of break working at my two jobs.
Ryan got a cool plant for his apartment from Fresh Thyme Market. I'll have to make a trip there to check out their selection, because he got a way better deal on this cute pot than I got on my plants in the Third Ward. I also discovered a weird latte flavor that's pretty good. I ordered two cases of Nut Pods coffee creamers last summer in a failed attempt to cut down my sugar consumption while drinking coffee. These looked good online, but I tried them in coffee and they were all terrible! The vanilla lemon flavors have been sitting in my cabinet for months. I finally found a use for them! When I steam soy milk for lattes, I add few tablespoons of the creamer and a packet of stevia and it turns out quite pleasant!
Meal prep for the first week of school. I made a pasta salad with Banza noodles, broccoli, tomatoes, olives, string cheese, and Italian dressing, along with a pot of spinach tortellini soup. The soup was good, but the tortellini sucked up all the broth after being put in the fridge so it turned out more like a regular pasta dish.
More cooking adventures! One of my upcoming posts features the recipe below. I tried a dish at Cafe Hollander called "Sweet Potato Noshers" and was inspired to create a version at home. Below is a simplified version Ryan and I made one morning that doesn't contain the full list of ingredients and also has scrambled eggs instead of sunny-side up. More on this to come!
The first snow of Milwaukee happened right before the start of classes! All hell broke loose weather-wise later, but on that night Ryan and I took a walk around town and made snow angels all over the place for people to find later.
Date nights: a huge bowl of ice cream, wine, and the movie "Clue." I found out that when the movie was first in theaters, each theater received just one of the three possible endings! That movie is always good for a laugh. And another when we convinced ourselves to go salsa dancing at the Milwaukee Art Museum, but due to the weather and not entirely feeling it we went out for drinks instead. The third picture from the left looks random at first, but if you look on the top left shelf there is a garden gnome encrusted with disco ball mirrors! So funny!

The first week of classes started with a bang. I did some cooking during the weekend to get ready for week 2. I made Moroccan Winter Detox Soup (my favorite lately), cream cheese stuffed bagel bites, and slow cooker Cajun soup.
Week 2 of school ended up being pretty crazy. Three of the five days were canceled, one due to a heavy snowstorm and the other two from the polar vortex. I was definitely feeling a little stir crazy by the end of the week! I did as much school work as I could and practiced making home lattes. The cold started seeping into our apartment, but we managed to stay fairly warm. Ryan and his roommates had a game night for some friends in our apartment complex. We played games and drank hot chocolate and it helped lift everyone's moods.

Overall, my new year's resolutions are going pretty well. I met my blog goal of publishing one post a week and made vast improvements on my minimal spending challenge. I still made some unnecessary purchases, but fewer than usual and I was able to save an okay chunk of money even after all my school expenses. I'm also still deciding on a practical grocery budget. I have only had two sugary coffee drinks so far this month, so that is pretty much on track as well. I am still struggling with my meal prep and portion control. My goal was to make a set meal plan to follow, but recipes have been hit and miss so that is still in the works. I also made gains in following the physical activity guidelines, but I am still not quite there. I'll unabashedly blame part of it on the weather during which time we had to stay indoors for safety, but the other part was totally on me! Lastly, I met met my minimalism challenge goals and donated/trashed 495 items! Now I'm going to try to adopt the "one in, one out" rule going forward.

One of my resolutions for the new year is to follow the recommended physical activity guidelines established by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. My undergraduate degree is in kinesiology, the study of physical activity. Despite my knowledge of the health benefits of physical activity, however, I do not regularly meet them! I want to be a better practitioner of what I preach. The main guidelines are as follows:

I decided to do some research on what exercises work each of the major muscle groups. I divided the categories into arms, abs, and legs. I picked 10 exercises for each major group. I made this workout with the intention it can be completed in 30 minutes. I usually use an interval timer and do each exercise for 45 seconds with a 15 second break between moves, but feel free to modify it to work for you, such as 30 seconds for work and rest! My main goal in sharing this is to help other people incorporate more strength training into their weeks because this was the area of the guidelines I struggled with the most.

The muscle groups I targeted for the arms and upper body include the chest (bench press, cactus arms), back (rows, deadlifts in the legs category), shoulders (shoulder press, shoulder shrug), triceps (triceps overhead press, triceps extension), biceps (bicep curls, hammer curls), and forearms (wrist curls).
The muscle groups I targeted for legs include the glutes (squats), quadriceps (squats, plie squats, squat kicks, lunge kicks), hamstrings (stiff-legged deadlift, one-legged deadlift), abductors and adductors (side leg lifts), and calves (calf raises).
The muscle groups I targeted for abs include the upper abs, lower abs, and transverse abdominals. Each move targets a little bit of all of them in different proportions.
I hope you all can take away something from this post. I have been interested in creating a workout guide for a long time but wasn’t sure how I wanted to go about it. I ended up making gifs of all the moves rather than using photos or sharing video footage. A special thanks to my boyfriend Ryan for helping me film the snippets and remaining helpful even when I got frustrated and self-conscious. I wasn’t really sure what to do with my face during the recordings. I was tempted to leave my face blank, but Ryan thought expression would be better and kept trying to get me to smile and laugh. I was much more comfortable at the end of the workout film sessions. I tried to model the proper postures, but some of these moves still challenge me. We had to film the single-leg deadlifts for a long time because I tipped over quite a few times! And I had a small slip during one of my side planks… 😉

Hello from Milwaukee! We've had a shock of snow and freezing temperatures during the past week. On my social media, people always joke about how terrible winters in Wisconsin are. However, the last few years have been surprisingly mild. Now, though, we are having a true winter! We've had two large snowstorms and another is supposedly on its way this weekend. Windchill warnings are in place for this weekend and the coming week. Yesterday before I left for class, my local weather app said temp of negative 6 but feels like negative 24! Yikes! Here are some photos of last Monday of a trek Ryan and I made to Lake Park after the first major snow and before the temps got too cold.
The snow appeared to have blown the snow up and then frozen it in midair all along the park fence railings. I haven't been to Lake Park in quite awhile, and going after the first snow while everything is still white and undisturbed was beautiful.
Winter parkour! Just kidding lol. Maybe by my definitions. I enjoy the last photo where all my hair is flying and my winter gear is hitting me in the face!
I don't have any remarks about the next few photos other than, "aren't they pretty?" so I'll share a couple life updates. My goals for the new year are off to a moderate start. Some have been easier than others and in my monthly recap post next week I will go into more specifics on successes and how to work harder on others to make them happen. I have been back at school for one week and the semester has started with a bang. I have two part-time jobs and seven classes, so I'm still adjusting to the onslaught of due dates and work scheduling. I am adjusting my meal prep goals so that I can cook a greater number of new recipes. Ryan and I made Thai food the night after this trip to the park and it was delicious and I cannot wait to share. This weekend I hope to try some recipes for Cajun soup and bagels (totally unrelated to each other).
The North Lighouthouse Ravine Trail is a cute little trail to take to get from the park to the lakefront. It has some wooden stairs and bridges along with a small waterfall that made some cool shapes as it froze over.
I took a panorama shot of the waterfall and surrounding area in addition to the photo below, but it was too large to upload (with my free service). This photo gets the point across though.

Milwaukee has many parks within the city and I would like to explore more of them! I have been growing more comfortable with exploring the city the longer I've been here. When I first moved for college, I was scared to step more than a couple blocks off campus! But, the longer I've stayed the better the map of the city I have in my head and the smaller it actually seems!
I hope you all enjoy your weekends. For the remainder of the weekend I have quite a bit of work to get done for school, but I plan on finishing the images for my 30-minute Strength Workout post, along with cooking the recipes I mentioned above. I was going to see some family today, but one member ended up ill, so my plans were cleared. There is a high of 9 later today so I might venture out to the grocery store, but otherwise I'll probably stay in and work from home!
This is my first Harry Potter post of the year. I have been a Harry Potter fan ever since I could read and I am currently on the seventh book of my fourteenth reread of the series! I kinda like it a lot!! I find it entertaining to dream about what I would be like as a wizard attending Hogwarts and have decided to share those magical thoughts here.

fifth book, the shop also sells coffee. I am a coffee lover, and the beverage is mentioned little in the Harry Potter world besides this shop, so I would make a beeline for it whenever Hogsmeade visits took place. I would love to try a butterbeer latte (recipe in progress).
