Pfeffernuesse, pronounced fef-fer-noose. These cookies are small but pack in a lot of spice!
Mix all the spices together in a small bowl.
Combine butter and brown sugar. Beat until light and fluffy.
Stir in molasses and water (spraying the measuring cup with cooking spray helps prevent sticking).
Add flour, spice mixture, baking soda, and salt. Mix well. Stir in nuts. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Shape dough into 1" balls and place 1 inch apart on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake 9-12 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown.
Immediately remove from cookie sheets and roll in powdered sugar.
