Last Wednesday my boyfriend and I decided we wanted to go camping! Yellowstone State Park was not tremendously far away, so we decided that would be the best option for out first expedition of the summer. That way if we forgot something important or ran into an emergency we were within driving distance of home and help.
We drove out to the park to reserve a spot, only to find our the park was nearly booked for the weekend! We would have to go back early Friday morning to try and snag one of the few non-reservable spots.
Friday morning we woke up at the fresh hour of 5:30 and set out on our way with the goal of being the first people at the campground office. And we were!! However, the office apparently doesn't open until 8:15am! Oops XD
So we walked around the beautiful grounds and took photos until it was eventually 8am. After that we went back to the car and tried not to fall asleep while waiting for the office to open!
Check out this weird/cute-in-its-own-unique-way bug we found!
The office eventually opened and we got to be the first in line like we hoped. For some reason there was an unbooked, non-hilly campsite located near the flushing toilets available!! We picked that one!
After paying our dues we went and checked it out. It was really cute but a little wet due to rain the night before. My boyfriend car got stuck in some mud, which was really scary to get out of. I did not handle the stress very well. I was afraid the car would slide back and squish him while he was pushing it from behind. It didn't though, and we were able to round up all of our camping gear and get set up by early afternoon! (we went back home to get some more stuff)
Cute little campsite. I also could not express how happy I was that we were near to flusher toilets. Pit toilets are the only things besides bugs that I dislike about camping. Hooray for flushers!
Then we got to work on relaxing and having fun! We hung out on a pier down on the lake for awhile before deciding to take a hiking trail called Windy Ridge.
That evening we spent around a campfire. We had to go out and buy more firewood because the logs we brought with us would not suffice for both the evening and morning! Earlier in the day we made yummy breakfast burritos with eggs, sausage, green onions, mushrooms, cheese, and spices! Because we didn't pack a lot of super substantial food, we ended up eating burritos for both dinner and breakfast.
The wood was also a little damp due to the weather. It took a long time to get started, but eventually was able to hold it's own! We burned a lot of paper though!
The fire we made for breakfast in the morning was almost entirely fueled by paper! There was so much white ash in the firepit when we left!!
We visited the pier again the next day, and this time brought the camera along. What a lovely day!
We also went swimming! My boyfriend taught me some swim moves and techniques since I'm not a strong swimmer, and then we played water games. It was a blast! :P
Around noon we went and packed up our campsite. There were other campers scheduled to move-in in a few hours, and since we wanted to do more hiking we packed up early in case we were gone a long time. The second trail we took was a combination loop of Timber, Oak Trail, Shortcut, and Windy Ridge!
Due to recent thunderstorms there were a lot of trees that had fallen over. We had to climb over and duck under a few in order to complete the trail!
After the long trail we decided it was probably time to head home. The day we spent at Yellowstone was wonderful, and I hope the next time we go camping we're able to stay longer!
The ride back to town was gorgeous as well. There were so many big fluffy clouds in the sky! :)
